Does our religion contain more recommended (mustahab) or obligatory (wajib) affairs? -Shaykh ibn al-’Uthaymeen

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

Does our religion contain more recommended (mustahab) or obligatory (wajib) affairs?

By Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him

The shaykh mentioned this point of benefit in his explanation of the poem “al-Waraqaat” under the 15th line which reads:

فالواجب المحكوم بالثواب … في فعله و الترك بالعقاب

“(There are more) recommended affairs and this is from the bounty of Allah azza wa jal. That is because it is required that the obligatory affairs are carried out. However there may be difficulty in doing so, and for this reason there are less obligatory affairs compared to the recommended. The status of the recommended affairs is increased and completed by their own merit and reward, and for this they are more.”
