Cold winters are a reminder of Jahannam

al-Haafidh ibn Rajab al-Hanbali al-Baghdaadi 795 AH, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

ومن فضائل الشتاء ؛ أنه يذكر بزمهرير جهنم ويوجب الإستعاذة منها

“…and from the virtues of the winter is that it reminds (us) of the Zamharir (extreme bitter cold) of Jahannam and necessitates seeking refuge from it.”

Commentary:

1.Ibn Rajab is referring to the hadith where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“…The Hell-fire complained to its Lord saying: ‘My Lord! My parts are consuming each other’.

So it was permitted two breaths (nafasayn): one breath in the winter and one breath in the summer. Therefore, whatever you find of intense heat in the summer is the breath of Hell-fire and whatever you find of Zamharir (‘extreme and bitter cold’) is also one of the breaths of Hell-fire…” [Bukhari #536]

2.Ibn al-Jawzi said about this word “Zamharir”:

قوله تعالى: { لاَ يرَوْنَ فيها شمساً } فيُؤذيهم حَرُّها { ولا زمهريراً } وهو البرد الشديد. والمعنى: لا يجدون فيها الحَرَّ والبرد.

“The Most High saying: {they will not see the sun} its heat causing them harm {nor Zamharir} which is the intense and bitter cold. Thus they will neither suffer intense pain nor cold.” [Zad al-Masir, 8:435]
