Sharh as-Sunnah: Point #1 Islaam is the Sunnah and the Sunnah is Islaam
By Shaykh Rabee’ bin Haadee al-Madkhali may Allah preserve him
This is the shaykh’s explanation for the first point in the book entitled “Sharh as-Sunnah” by the great Imaam Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Alee ibn Khalaf al-Barbahaaree 329 AH.
Imaam al-Barbahaaree (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
1: “Know that Islaam is the Sunnah, and the Sunnah is Islaam and one of them cannot be established without the other.”
(The author), may Allah have mercy on him, is highlighting the status of the Sunnah. Surely Islaam is the call (da’wah) of all of the Prophets, Allah said:
إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمُ
“Truly, the religion with Allah is Islaam.” [Ali ‘Imraan: 19]
He the Most High said,
“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.” [Ali ‘Imraan: 85]
And the Sunnah is the path of the Prophet, peace be upon him, his methodology, and his manners. So whoever does not come with this Sunnah then they are misguided innovators who have not come with Islaam. Anyone who intentionally opposes the Sunnah, then perhaps they become a disbeliever or hypocrite, and we seek refuge in Allah from all of that.
