‘Umar bin ‘Abdil-Azeez 151 AH (may Allah have mercy on him) said,

خذوا من الرأي ما يوافق من كان قبلكم فانهم كانوا أعلم منكم

Take the view that agrees with those whom have preceded you. For truly they were more knowledgeable than you.
