Is it sufficient for us to ONLY ask Allah for knowledge? -Shaykh ibn al-‘Uthaymeen

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

Is it sufficient for us to ONLY ask Allah for knowledge?

By Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him

The shaykh said in his book Riyaad as-Saaliheen (3/413) under the chapter: “Virtue of learning and teaching knowledge for Allah”:

It is befitting for the slave to ask Allah to increase him in knowledge, but whenever he asks Allah to increase him it is a must to also take the means of obtaining knowledge. If he were to say, “O my Lord increase me in knowledge,” but he does not take the causes (in obtaining knowledge) then this is not from wisdom. It is not correct for one to say, “O Allah provide me a son” and he is not married. Where will this son come from? Therefore, whenever you ask Allah for something you have to also transverse a path in acquiring it. Allah is the Most Wise and He connected the effects along with its causes.
