In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful
The remedy/cure for forgetting knowledge
By Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him
The shaykh mentioned this point of benefit in his explanation of the poem “al-Bayquniyyah”. It can be found under the fourth line of the poem, he said:
“If it was asked is there a remedy/cure for forgetting knowledge?
Then we say yes there is a remedy, by the grace of Allah, and it is by writing. This is something Allah has bestowed upon His slaves. He said (in suratul Alaq),
“Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), (1)
He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood) (2)
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, (3)
Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. (4)”
Allah said “Read!” and then said “Who has taught by the pen.”
Meaning, write what you memorized.
Allah explained to us how this sickness can be cured if knowledge is not in our hearts (meaning not memorized). The sickness is being forgetful and it is cured by writing. And we find that (today) writing is more accurate than memorizing because it can be recorded/saved, and all praises are due to Allah.”
