In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful
How different sects in Islaam are given their names
By Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan may Allah preserve him
The shaykh mentions this point of benefit in his explanation of “Al-Aqeedatul Wasateeyah” when he explains “ahlus-sunnah wal jamaa’ah”:
“(Ahlus) Sunnah… They are given this name because of their ascription to the messenger (peace be upon him)…this is contrary to the people of innovation. Indeed they are ascribed to their innovations and corruption. Like the ‘qadareeyah and murji’ah’. Sometimes they are ascribed to their leaders/founders like the ‘jahmeeyah’, and sometimes they are ascribed to their ugly actions like the ‘raafidah, and khawaarij'”
