Nifaaq (Hypocrisy) is of two types (may Allah save us all from both!)

The shaykh says in his book “Sharh jadeed ala qawl mufeed” (pg. 322-328) under the chapter: Hypocrisy is of two types:

1. Hypocrisy of belief نفاق اعتقادي

It is for a person to declare Islaam openly (for the people), but secretly disbelieve and hate it. This type takes one out of Islam, and it is the hypocrisy of disbelief. If one were to die upon it they would be in the lowest level in hell. As Allah says (4:145):

ان المنافقون في الدرك الأسفل من النار و لن تجد لهم نصيرا

“Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.”

2. Hypocrisy of actions نفاق عملي

This type is considered to be lesser than the first and it does not take one out of Islam, but it is obligatory for one to make repentance from it.

‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

“Whosoever possesses these four characteristics is a sheer hypocrite; and anyone who possesses one of them possesses a characteristic of hypocrisy till he gives it up. These are: when he is entrusted with something, he proves dishonest; when he speaks, he tells a lie; when he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous; and when he quarrels, he behaves in very imprudent, evil, insulting manner.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

We see that these characteristics are:

1. When he is entrusted with something, he proves dishonest

2. When he speaks, he tells a lie

3. When he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous

4. When he quarrels, he behaves in very imprudent, evil, insulting manner.”
