Six conditions for affirming the shahaadah “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” 

By Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhali may Allah have mercy on him

The Shaykh mentioned this point of benefit in his explanation of “Thalaathatul Usool” on page 19. He said,

The scholars mention that following and affirming the testimony “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” has six conditions:

First: To acknowledge his message and to believe in it within the heart

Second: Pronounce that belief, as that is acknowledging the message with the tongue

Third: Following him by abiding to what he ordered, prohibited, made permissible and impermissible

Fourth: Believing in everything he informed us of from the unknown affairs, both past and future

Fifth: Loving him more than oneself, wealth, children, parents, and all of people

Sixth: Preferring his statement over the statement of every other person and acting upon his sunnah

Shaykh Zayd also compiled a poem in arabic that combines all of these conditions together:

وبشروط ستة قد علمت
ومن نصوص الشرع حقاً فهمت

أولها اعتراف فاعتقاد باطناً
بشرعة الهادي يقيناً بينا

والثاني نطق باللسان واضح
بها صريحاً فانطقوها تفلحوا

والثالث الإحسان في المتابعة
في الأمر والنهي بلا ممانعة

والرابع التصديق فيما أخبرا
أسوتنا المختار سيد الورى

والخامس المحبة الشرعية
دليلها في السنن المروية

أقواله قدم كذاك فاعتصم
بالسنة الغراء سبيل من فهم

وذا هو الشرط الأخير فاعلمن
والمعنى حقق يا وريث المؤتمن
