Is it permissible to shake or wobble while reciting the Qur’an?
By Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan may Allah preserve him
Question: Some people when they recite the Qur’an sway their body, is this action permissible?
Answer: When you research the issue of swaying the body, or wobbling, during time of recitation you find that it is from the actions of the Jews when they recite their Torah. It is even from the actions of the Christians when they recite their Gospel. Therefore, (wobbling or swaying when reciting the Scripture) is from the actions of Ahlul Kitaab and we do not imitate/resemble them. Allah, azza wa jal, also said:
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ فَٱسۡتَمِعُواْ لَهُ ۥ وَأَنصِتُواْ
“So, when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it, and be silent…” [Surah al-‘Araaf: 204]
And being silent means to cease movement by stop wobbling, shifting, or turning.
