‘Abdullah ibn al-Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) once said:

ابن مسعود: لا ينفع قول إلا بعمل، ولا ينفع قول وعمل إلا بنية، ولا ينفع قول وعمل ونية إلا مما وافق السنة

“Speech will not benefit except with action, and speech and action will not benefit except with a correct intention. Speech, action, and a correct intention will not benefit except with what is in accordance with the sunnah”
