Hadith about curing fevers

By Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him

The shaykh mentioned this point of benefit in his explanation of “Riyaadus Saaliheen” under the 1866th hadith (arabic version) and 1857th hadith (english translation),

‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

الحمى من فيح جهنم فأبردوها بالماء

“Fever comes from the vehement raging of Hell, so cool it with water”

Collected by Bukhari and Muslim

This is a sickness that affects mankind with heat in the body. This is from the vehement raging of Hell, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said. As for how the vehement raging reaches the body, then this affair is with Allah. We do not know how but we say just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Fever comes from the vehement raging of Hell, so cool it with water.”

Meaning, pour water on the sick so that it can cool him down. This is from the means of being cured for the one who’s afflicted with a fever, and modern medicine has attested to this. Among the other treatments of fever, physicians have ordered for cold water to be placed on the sick’s face so as long there is no harm. This is the best (method) and, by the permission of Allah, it will cause the fever to disappear.
