Can you break your fast because of severe illness?
By Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi’ee may Allah have mercy on him
Question: What is the ruling of breaking one’s fast because of having a continuous chronic sickness for several years?
Answer: If the doctors decide that there is no hope for recovery, and Allah is ash-Shaafi (the One who cures), it is possible for that person to be healed. But they decided there is no hope for recovery then there is no problem in feeding a poor person everyday. Just as our Lord said,
وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ ۥ فِدۡيَةٌ۬ طَعَامُ مِسۡكِينٍ۬ۖ
“And as for those who can fast with difficulty they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskîn (poor person) (for every day).” [Baqarah: 184]
Thus, when Anas bin Maalik wasn’t able to fast anymore he would feed a poor person every day.
