Shaykhul Islaam Ahmad ibn Taymeeyah 728AH (May Allah have mercy on him) said,

فإن البِدَع في الدين سبب الفواحش وغيرها من المنكرات ،
كما أن إخلاص الدين لله سبب التقوى وفعل الحسنات ،
قال تعالى:
( ﻳَﺎ ﺃَﻳُّﻬَﺎ ﺍﻟﻨَّﺎﺱُ ﺍﻋْﺒُﺪُﻭﺍ ﺭَﺑَّﻜُﻢُ ﺍﻟَّﺬِﻱ ﺧَﻠَﻘَﻜُﻢْ ﻭَﺍﻟَّﺬِﻳﻦَ ﻣِﻦْ ﻗَﺒْﻠِﻜُﻢْ ﻟَﻌَﻠَّﻜُﻢْ ﺗَﺘَّﻘُﻮﻥَ )
وقوله : (لعلكم تتقون) متعلق بقوله (اعبدوا ربكم ) لعل التقوى تحصل لكم بعبادته.

Verily innovations in the religion is the cause for immorality and other evils. Just as sincerity of the religion for Allah is the cause for Taqwa and good deeds. Allah said,

“O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous” [Baqarah: 21]

His statement, “…that you may become righteous” is connected to, “…worship your Lord…” because through acts of worship you attain Taqwa.
