How can you increase your love for Allah?

By Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-’Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him 

Question: What are the causes that will strengthen one’s love for Allah, one’s magnification as well as exaltation for Him in the heart?

Answer: The only cause that Allah has made clear is found in His statement,

قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ

“Say (O Muhammad to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins…'” [Aali ‘Imraan: 31]

Whenever one increases in following the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, then their love for Allah will also increase. The affair is not whether you love Allah, rather the affair is whether Allah Loves you. This is why He said, “…If you (really) love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you…” and He did not say “Follow me and you will be truthful in your claims.”

So it is upon you, when you want to increase in your love for Allah, to hold firmly to the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace be upon him). You will find that Allah will Love you and your love for Allah will increase – we ask Allah to make this as a reality for us and He has power over all things.

All praises are due to Allah, Lord of everything that exists. We ask Allah to grant us all love for Him, love for those whom He Loves, and love for actions that will draw us closer to Him, indeed He is Jawwaad Kareem.
