Refraining from good deeds for fear of showing off?

By Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him

 The shaykh gives this advice in his explanation of Riyaadus Saliheen under the first hadeeth. He says:

“And know that Shaytaan may come to you when you want to do a good deed and say, ‘You are only doing this deed to show off!’ He will cause distress and discourage you from that deed. However, do NOT pay attention to this and do NOT obey him. Rather, do the action because if someone asked if you are doing this deed to show off or for reputation you would say no.”
