What prayers should be avoided whilst traveling?
by Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan may Allah preserve him
Question: Are the Duhaa, Witr, and Fajr sunnah prayers the only voluntary prayers that should be observed by the traveler?
Answer: The Sunnah Rawaatib. The prayers that should be left off are the Sunnah Rawaatib (4 before and 2 after Dhuhr, 2 after Maghrib, and 2 after Eshaa) for the traveler. These prayers are normally prayed along with the obligatory prayers. As for the rest of the voluntary prayers then it should be done if possible while traveling. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) traveled, he prayed Tahajjud wherever he was. He never left off Tahajjud and the same goes for the sunnah of Fajr and Witr. Whether he traveled or not, he never abandoned the Fajr and Witr sunnah prayers.
