Can you recite the Qur’an while laying down?
Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Aziz bin Abdillah bin Baaz may Allah have mercy on him
Question: Is it permissible to recite the Qur’an while laying down on the bed, and what do you advise to do if there comes a verse of prostration?
Answer: Na’am, there is no problem with reciting the Qur’an while standing, sitting, making prostration, or laying down because of Allah’s statement,
الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىَ جُنُوبِهِمْ
“Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides” [Ali ‘Imraan: 191]
and His statement,
فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ الصَّلاَةَ فَاذْكُرُواْ اللّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَى جُنُوبِكُمْ
“And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides.” [Nisaa: 103]
This is from the blessings of Allah and He has made it easy for us, and the Qur’an is the greatest remembrance. So if one were to recite the Qur’an while laying down then there is no sin in that, and the same goes if he was sitting. If he passes by a verse of prostration then, if he wishes he can, stand and make prostration or sit and make prostration. That is because sajdah is not obligatory, rather it is a highly recommended sunnah.
