What is the difference between Salah Taraaweeh, Qiyaam, and Tahajjud? -Shaykh bin Baaz

What is the difference between Salah Taraaweeh, Qiyaam, and Tahajjud?

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Aziz bin Abdillah bin Baaz may Allah have mercy on him

Question: What is the difference between Salah Taraaweeh, Qiyaam, and Tahajjud?

Answer: Prayer in the night is called Tahajjud and it is also called Qiyaamul Layl. As Allah the Most High said,

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَكَ
“And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you” [Israa: 79]

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلا قَلِيلًا
“O you who wraps himself [in clothing], Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little” [Muzzamil: 1-2]

And He said about His pious slaves,

“Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good. They used to sleep but little of the night.” [Dhairyaat: 16-17]

Taraaweeh is, according to the scholars, the prayer in the first part of the night during Ramadan. It is light and not elongated. It is permissible and nothing wrong to call it Tahajjud or Qiyaamul Layl…and Allah is the granter of success

  1. Thanks for the explanation. I was really not much aware about these different prayers. I am getting to know more and more about Islam and the holy month of Ramadan and this is another good post I read in the go. Thanks for sharing
