‘Abdur-Rahmaan al-Awzaa’ee 157 AH (May Allah have mercy on him) said:

الزهد في الدنيا ترك المحمدة , تعمل العمل لا تريد أن يحمدك الناس عليه

“Asceticism (Zuhd) in the worldly life is to abandon doing things for the sake of praise, and to perform deeds you do not want people to praise you for.”
